Another one of my friends and mentors, Mark Millen (who also is a heck of an attorney), sent me a link to a speech from Abraham Lincoln about two years ago this week. I have kept it bookmarked ever since. For those who want the text, it is here. For those who want the highlights, here you go................advice from Mr. Lincoln:
- The leading rule for lawyers: diligence
- If you are going to sue someone, to borrow from Nike, "Just Do It."
- If you have a point of law on some issue, cite it in your initial documents - you will always be able to find it later.
- Practice extemporaneous speaking!!!!!!!
- Do not rely too much on speech making!
- Discourage litigation.
- Do not stir up litigation.
- Never take an exorbitant fee.
- Never take your whole fee in advance.
- Never sell a fee note.
There you go. Ten things you can learn from Abraham Lincoln. Some of it may sound outdated, but I believe it all still applies today.
